Desidero segnalare una bella
storia a lieto fine: il recupero di una rarissima
gondola, più piccola delle nostre classiche, ma
costruita con tutta sicurezza a Venezia. |

Il recupero è opera dell'amico
Nick Birch che gestisce a Stratford-upon-Avon una ditta
di noleggio di imbarcazioni. Questa barca va ad
aggiungersi alla sua flotta personale che comprende
un'altra bellissima gondola originale e alcune
mascarete autocostruite.
La gondola apparteneva alla
famosa scrittrice inglese Mary Mackay più conosciuta con
il nome d'arte di
Marie Corelli che la usava per navigare sull'Avon
con il fido gondoliere veneziano. Alla sua morte passò
ad altri proprietari per essere infine acquistato da una
ditta di noleggi cinematografici.
Seguivamo da almeno
vent'anni questo scafo nel timore che andasse distrutto
o stravolto da un pesante restauro, avevamo anche
chiesto di acquistarlo segnalando la sua importanza
storica, ma senza nessun risultato. Finché in questi
giorni la ditta ha venduto all'asta tutta l'eterogenea
flotta, permettendo a Nick di acquistarla e di rivararla
nel fiume che l'aveva vista navigare per tanti anni. |

I would like to report a
lovely story with a happy end; the recovery of a very
rare gondola, much smaller then our classic gondolas,
but verified as having been built in Venice.
The recovery was the work of Nick Birch, who has a
business in Stratford-upon-Avon hiring boats. This boat
will ad to his personal fleet which includes another
beautiful original gondola, and several other self-built
mascarete.
The gondola belonged to the famous English author Mary
Mackay, better known by her pen-name of Marie Corelli,
and she used it to navigate on the Avon with her trusty
Venetian gondolier. After her death, the boat passed
through the hands of other owners before finally being
acquired by a firm which hired out boats to film
companies.
Following at least twenty years, this boat was in danger
of being destroyed or distorted by a heavy handed
restoration, and informing them of it's historical
importance we asked to buy it, but without any result.
Recently the firm sold at auction all their varied fleet,
allowing Nick to acquire the gondola and return her to
the river where she had not been seen for many years. |

L'identificazione dello scafo
è stato possibile dal disegno degli intagli e dal
carteggio intercorso fra lo squero veneziano dei Casal e
la ditta inglese che ordino una flotta di 8 gondole per
una esibizione a Londra nel 1904. |
